PD Workshop 07'- 08' Guidelines

Welcome to the Playwright/Director's Workshop. (PDW) We want to take
this opportunity to tell our new and returning members the basic
ground rules to the workshop which have changed considerably this
year.

1.) Purpose. The purpose of the PDW is to facilitate the process
of playwriting and directing through the collaborative efforts of the
playwright, directing and acting teams. We welcome nascent material,
that is to say, plays written in the first draft form where the
directing of the project is still in a table-work stage, (i.e.) early
blocking and conceptual work. We work on original scenes of an act,
not the entire play. Full-length plays read in their entirety are
appropriate to the Monday Night P/D Unit at the Studio and are not
appropriate to our Tuesday night PDW.

2.) Format. A project will only be permitted to have 20-25
minutes of performance time, followed by 15 minutes of commentary
provided by members of the PDW, moderated by Carlin Glynn or in her
absence by one of the senior members of the PDW or Actors Studio of
Carlin's choice. Due to time constraints all presentations will
strictly adhere to the 25 minute cut-off time period. There will be
no exceptions. Your presentation will be stopped if you go
overtime. Plan accordingly.

3.) Tenor. Because early work can be so tender, we ask that
members in the PDW keep their comments specific and constructive. If
you can, remember to be observational in your comments by telling the
author what you saw and how it affected you. In the true spirit of
collaboration, any and all artistic differences between members are
to be expressed in a civil, respectful manner at all times. We are
here to support and help each other articulate work, see the work in
motion, and help the author and director reach their artistic goals.

4.) Membership. Membership in the PDW is by INVITATION ONLY based
on a yearly written `Letter of Consideration' submitted by the
deadline of the upcoming fall workshop sessions. The invitation of
membership can only come from the director of the workshop, Carlin
Glynn. The deadline is determined by the director of the workshop and
will be announced well in advance on the PDW yahoo website. To be
considered for membership in the P/D Workshop, you must either be a
member of the Actors Studio, or a working finalist in the Actors
Studio, or have graduated from the playwrights/directors MFA programs
at the Actors Studio Drama School, or at the personal invitation of
the director, Carlin Glynn. Membership does not automatically carry
over from year to year, and may be similarly (and summarily) revoked
by the director of the workshop.

5.) Membership Categories. The PDW is divided into three
membership categories.

a.) Active Membership - is a member in good standing, attending on a
regular basis, (four or more consecutive sessions) thereby granted
the privilege of booking timeslots to develop work. An active member
is permitted to comment during the feedback period in all PDW
sessions.

b.) Honorarium Membership - is a member in good standing, but due to
scheduling conflicts (professional or otherwise) cannot commit to
attendance on a regular basis, and therefore cannot book timeslots to
develop work. However, a honorarium member may comment during the
feedback period during sessions.

c.) Observer Membership - is a member that is not an active or
honorarium member of the PDW, but is a working finalist or
professional observer at the Actors Studio. We invite you to join us
to observe the workshop process (and meet us before and afterwards as
a potential actor), but ask that you not comment during the feedback
period.

If you are not sure of your membership status, please email Carlin
Glynn at Angelton@aol.com. Remind her of your name, status of
membership in one of the above groups, and your past participation in
the P/D Workshop. Also, if applying for first time membership,
remember to include a sample of your writing (a one act or a full
length). In order to maintain your membership in the P/D Workshop,
attendance is REQUIRED and determines who is eligible to present work
on an ongoing basis. If you cannot attend a particular meeting,
please email your regrets to PDWorkshop@yahoogroups.com.

Lifetime Acting Members of the Studio who write, and working
finalists who also write are asked to work on their material in the
Acting Sessions at the Studio as opposed to the PDW. As the Acting
Sessions are available to them, and are not available to members of
the PDW, all playwrights and directors will be given first priority
when presenting work in the PDW.

6.) Electronic communication. The PDW uses Yahoo Groups to
facilitate its conversations, scheduling, casting, and
correspondences of official notification. If you are not on the
email group (and its helpful calendar), email Jeremy Kareken at
Jeremy@no-monkey.com. Please take this moment to peruse the Yahoo
Groups help file at http://help.yahoo.com/help/groups.

7.) Scheduling. If you are eligible and would like to schedule
your project, please email Billie Roe at BillieRoe2003@aol.com.

PLAYWRIGHTS. In an attempt to more fully develop your work,
Carlin asks that when submitting your `Letter of Consideration' for
yearly membership consideration, you declare the play you would like
to work on for the next year. One full-length play, or two one acts
plays are the only work to be considered to focus on throughout the
PDW scheduled year. When declaring your work you need not have a
director assigned at the time of your membership request.

1.) The first booking period for projects generated
by eligible PLW's proposed to begin in the fall is undetermined at
this time. (TBA)

2.) The second booking period for projects generated by eligible
PLW's beginning in the spring sessions is undetermined at this time.
(TBA)

If you are working with a member DIR, you, (the PLW) will be the one
delegated to do the booking for the project. If you prefer your DIR
to book space please advise Billie Roe FIRST before you request a
booking. Thank you.

2.) All PLW are strongly encouraged to work with DIR from the PDW
membership only. Any director not of the membership must be first
cleared by Carlin before a playwright may book any timeslots.

DIRECTORS. In an attempt to more fully develop your work,
Carlin asks that when submitting your `Letter of Consideration' for
yearly membership consideration, you declare the play/playwright you
would like to work on for the next year. One full-length play, or
two one acts plays are the only work to be considered to focus on
throughout the PDW scheduled year. There is one exception to this
ruling.

1.) A DIR wishes to work on a non-original work with
Carlin's approvalbefore booking any timeslots. (Ex. King Lear set in
Bayonne, New Jersey)

NEW MEMBERS. New Members to the group (PLW and DIR) are
asked to wait four weeks before booking time slots so as to acquaint
themselves with the guidelines and membership of the group. After
four consecutive weeks of attendance their status automatically goes
to Active Membership.

Submitting Requests - Please submit all requests by email to
BillieRoe2003@aol.com. Be sure to include the name of the project,
your full name, your phone number, and the director's full name every
time you submit an official request. You will be given a temporary
confirmation, at which time one week before the requested date you
will be contacted to confirm your booking, and by the Friday before
your scheduled presentation, you will be asked to include the names
of your cast members, the person reading your stage directions, and
any invited guests (guest list) as this information is submitted by
Billie the morning of your presentation for the purposes of the
program.

On a personal note - It would be greatly appreciated if you not
approach Billie during session to request bookings because 1.) she
will likely not remember the details, and 2.) as a member of the PDW
she would like to participate as a playwright as she spends a good
deal of her week preparing for upcoming sessions as the
scheduler/juggler/assistant to Carlin/liaison to fellow
members/playwright. (Feel free to introduce yourself if I don't know
you. As I have so many names to match faces with it's extremely
helpful in the booking process. Many thanks in advance to all of you
wonderful artists.)

Setting Up - If your project is scheduled first, every effort should
be made to set up before 5 PM so we may begin promptly at five. If
you and your cast cannot arrive earlier, please do not book a 5 PM
timeslot. The theatre will be reserved at 4:30PM for our Tuesday
night sessions beginning promptly at 5PM. There are 3 projects
booked per session starting at 5PM, with the second going up at
5:40PM and the third at 6:20PM. While discussion is going on for the
first project, set-up for the second project can take place quietly,
and the same for the third presentation of the evening.

Cancellations -As all timeslots will be booked in advance, if you
cancel your booking you have forfeited your timeslots unless YOU
arrange to switch with someone with a later booking. Please book
wisely.

Alternate List - An alternate list will be used based on the original
date of request. Alternates are CALLED on a first come first serve
basis. If you want to be placed on the Alternate List please
indicate so upon making your original booking requests or email
Billie separately. Be sure to include your phone number and CALL me
back with your response as it's faster. My cell phone is (917) 589-
1737 and my work is (212) 688-4000, EXT. 400. By the way, I work M-
F, 9-5PM.

Contact Sheet - A contact sheet is available to all PDW members. It
is an invaluable resource and constant reference throughout the
year. Kevin Podgorski is responsible for updating all contact
information throughout the year. Please be sure to send him your
contact information via email. His email address is
Kevin.podgorski@gmail.com. Please double check to make sure your
contact information is correct as the contact sheet is updated on a
regular basis.

Lastly, it is Carlin's belief that the true value of our PDW
is to encourage the process of working the craft of writing,
directing and acting thereby bringing the work to it's fullest
potential as opposed to focusing on the end results of production.

Thank you all for the work, attitudes, and joy you bring to this
process.

Yours,

Carlin Glynn and Billie Roe
